Striving To Stay Below Average

As those sleek Cybex machines steal the show on “The Biggest Loser,” the so-called “average” American may choke on these sobering statistics provided in the illustrated graphic provided by VisualEconomics.com.  The average American has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28.1. The Mayo Clinic’s Body Mass Calculator classified a BMI of 30 or above as obese.

The graphics illustrate why America is also the world leader in health care costs.  We are eating WAY too much factory-farmed “meat,” simple carbohydrates, and fats.  Most of our “vegetable” consumption is in the form of processed potatoes.

While exercise is essential to health and overall fitness, it is only half of the equation.  Proper nutrition--the right fuel for the job of living and thriving--is critical.  Cybex can provide impeccable fitness equipment and you may be motivated to exercise diligently, but if you overeat and/or eat poorly, you will not get or stay fit.

If you think your own eating regimen needs some tweaking, I recommend any book by Michael Pollan.  Most notably, his recent book, Food Rules  is a concisely-written handbook offering 64 guiding principles for eating wisely.  His common-sense rules for eating are simple, memorable, and often humorous.
