If You Tweet While You Eat, Your Meal Will Feel Incomplete
Back in January 2011 and in September 2010, I emphasized the importance of SATIETY in reinforcing one’s diet goals. Simple common sense tells us that compliance to a sensible weight loss or maintenance program is much more likely if one is satiated during the day. This also enables us to have the stamina to power through heart-pumping Arc workouts and/or a circuit blitz on the Cybex weight machines at your local gym.
This past weekend, while eating lunch at a busy food court, I paused while savoring my tofu salad with cilantro vinaigrette to look around. I noticed chubby teenagers texting frantically on their cell phones, while mindlessly munching on greasy French fries and other nutrient-poor calorie bombs. I also noticed weary sales clerks practically swallowing their pizza slices while sifting through piles of paperwork. At least half of the lunch patrons appeared to be either talking or texting on their cell phones.
Many of the above-mentioned distracted diners displayed varying degrees of obesity. This non-scientific observation motivates me to stress to all of you “Biggest Losers” and “Maximizing Maintainers” (that’s what I call myself”) the importance of eating mindfully. Look at your food—smell it, taste it, appreciate it for the nutrient-rich, empowering gift that it is. Don’t tweet when you eat. The awareness of the meal you savor will carry you to the next eating occasion without a “need” to overeat later.
