Cybex International UK announced as official naming rights partner of 2016 British Weight Lifting & Para-Powerlifting Championships

British Weight Lifting has announced Cybex International UK, a leading supplier of premium commercial fitness equipment, as the official naming rights partner of the 2016 British Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting Championships, extending Cybex’s existing partnership with the national governing body for the sport.

Taking place at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on 11th - 12th June for the third consecutive year, the Cybex British Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting Championships will see the country’s best weightlifters and para-powerlifters compete for the coveted title of British Champion; the event will also be the last opportunity for British athletes to earn one of two places available for the Olympic Games in Brazil this summer.

As part of the sponsorship agreement, Cybex will provide all training equipment for the warm up area of the event, including Cybex’s Big Iron lifting platforms. Todays’ announcement re-affirms the existing partnership which sees the two organisations working together to promote the sport to a wide network of gyms and training facilities; Cybex HQ was also recently named a 1st4sport recognised centre as part of its partnership with British Weight Lifting, permitting the site to host official 1st4sport qualifications including the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Weight Lifting.

British Weight Lifting athletes and coaches are also provided with full access to Cybex UK’s HQ gym – a 4500 ft² site in Leicestershire which is located close to British Weight Lifting’s high performance centre at Loughborough University.

Commenting on the announcement, Ashley Metcalfe, British Weight Lifting CEO, said: “We are delighted to extend our existing partnership with Cybex to include the 2016 British Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting Championships, providing the lifters with the best-in-quality equipment to support their preparation at what is our biggest domestic competition of the year.

“It’s vital that we partner with suppliers who believe in and support our aims as a national governing body, and in Cybex we have done exactly that; they are a fantastic supporter of the sport and are dedicated to working with us from a grass roots level right through to our elite athletes, as we focus on not only growing participation and attracting new talent but also providing professional competition environments to inspire our existing athletes.”

Rob Thurston, sales director for Cybex UK, said: “Cybex has been a pioneer of strength equipment for many years and our new partnership with British Weight Lifting demonstrates our dedication to promoting the sport and its many benefits. We’re also excited to support the athletes in their preparation for a competition that is guaranteed to deliver big lifts and impressive performances – we’re already looking forward to it!”

The two-day event in Coventry will welcome the sport’s biggest names, including current Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Zoe Smith, European Senior medallist Rebekah Tiler, European Under 23 Champion Sarah Davies and British Champion Sonny Webster.

The para-powerlifting competition will feature two of British Weight Lifting’s Rio 2016 representatives - current IPC World Champion Ali Jawad and four-time Paralympian Natalie Blake.
