The staff and students of Wood Green School celebrated the opening of a new fitness suite this month, as part of a two-year school wellbeing pilot led by Nuffield Health.
The onsite gym has been equipped by Cybex, who donated six pieces of cardiovascular equipment including a treadmill and Arc Trainer as part of the project, which aims to provide more effective support and infrastructure to improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of both pupils and staff at the school in Witney, Oxfordshire.
First launched by Nuffield Health in September 2015, the new fitness suite has been welcomed by the secondary school and sits alongside other health and wellbeing initiatives set up by Nuffield Health including lifestyle health assessments for staff, unique junior health MOTs for pupils, nutritional review of the school restaurant, and developing an emotional wellbeing service.
Terry Austin, head of wellbeing at Wood Green School, is responsible for developing the health and wellbeing strategy. Commenting on the launch of the new gym, he said: “I’d like to extend the thanks to Cybex from the Wood Green School Community including staff, students, parents and governors for supporting Nuffield Health’s pilot study into school wellbeing. Physical activity is one of our key focus areas and Cybex have contributed massively towards our wellbeing effort with their top of the range cardiovascular equipment. This is a real visual statement in providing exercise opportunities for both pupils and staff and taking another step closer to Wood Green’s values and Nuffield Health’s vision of a wellbeing school.”
This installation is the latest in long-term partnership between Cybex UK and Nuffield Health, which has seen the two organisations work together on a range of sites across both corporate and education sectors; Cybex has also equipped Nuffield Health’s HQ gym in Epsom, Surrey.
Luke Berry, key account manager at Cybex UK said: “We have a longstanding relationship with Nuffield Health and the fitness suite at Wood Green School is another site that we are proud to be a part of. Increasing physical activity within the education sector is something that we are very passionate about and through this project we are confident that the pupils and staff will experience significant benefits.”
Speaking at the launch of the new gym, ParalympicsGB star Ali Jawad, said: “The new Fitness Suite at Wood Green School is a great facility - The Nuffield Health Wellbeing pilot is also a fantastic way of encouraging the pupils to get more active and the Cybex equipment is fantastic; I only wish I had access to somewhere like this when I was at school!”
