Last month, the Cybex team descended upon the Windy City to unveil new equipment, create some impact at one of our favorite locations, the East Bank Club, and celebrated a dear friend and fitness legend, John McCarthy, as he was honored at the Club Industry show being held in Chicago. It was a very exciting and enjoyable week for all involved.
Cybex Event at the East Bank Club
Things kicked off with Cybex Research Institute teaching fellow Michelle Amore speaking to the training staff at the East Bank Club. Michelle's presentation, "Training 'Special' Populations", dealt with a familiar issue for trainers. As a fitness professional, many times they are faced with a client who is considered part of a special population and the trainer may want to consider asking themselves, "What does this individual currently have to work with, and how can I help optimize those strengths?" rather than "What's wrong with them and how do I fix the problem?" Michelle's presentation was very well received and will be put to use with clients at the EBC.
Todd Durkin #IMPACT Hurricane Circuit
Following Michelle's time with the East Bank Staff, Todd Durkin, trainer of Super Bowl MVP's Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, as well as local favorite Charles "Peanut" Tillman, took the trainers through one of his famous #IMPACT hurricane circuits, complete with a Cybex Arc Trainer challenge incorporated into the workout.
The trainers gave their all, "and then some," as Durkin says, as they powered through several intense workout stations. When it came to the Arc Trainer, the trainers, who were now the athletes, were firing on all cylinders as they tried to sustain the highest output they could.
Leaving it all on the Turf
Todd finished things off with the East Bank crew by breaking them into teams and having a little fun with a relay race. These trainers left everything they had on the turf of the East Bank Club, but had just enough in reserve for an electric breakdown with Todd.

Celebrating John McCarthy
After the day of exercising both the minds and bodies of the East Bank Club staff, we moved across the building to spend some time with some VIP guests from the area and celebrate the new Eagle NX strength line.
In addition to celebrating the Eagle NX line, we were able to also celebrate the accomplishments of a dear friend of Cybex, John McCarthy, on the eve of receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from Club Industry. John is the founding executive director of the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) and only the 12th recipient of this award. For over a quarter century, John has helped the fitness club industry grow both in numbers and geography.
To celebrate John and his accomplishments, Cybex CEO Art Hicks held a toast during the evening's event to congratulate John as well as thank him. John said a few words and told those in attendance how happy he was to still be a part of the industry and to work with Cybex in his current advisory role. The night was a special one for Cybex, as we were able to celebrate a friend and spend time with so many others while here in Chicago. Check out some great photos from the evening below:
The following morning, Art and other members of the Cybex team headed to the Club Industry show to watch John receive his Lifetime Achievement award and hear his remarks to the audience. Art was able to congratulate John
following his acceptance speech as did many others who came to honor John.
All in all, it was a tremendous few days in Chicago celebrating so many great products and people. Special thank yous to Michelle Amore and Todd Durkin for spending time with the East Bank Club staff, and to the East Bank Club for their hospitality. We'd also like to thank all of our guests who attended our evening reception and joined us in celebrating the Eagle NX and our dear friend, John McCarthy.
