Losing 100 Pounds With The Arc Trainer: One Man's Journey

There isn’t a much better feeling than when we get a note from someone who shares his or her journey with us. Whether it is how Cybex helped them rehab an injury, get ready for their first marathon, or hit a weight-loss goal, finding out how Cybex equipment was a part of their success brings a little extra energy to all of us. The raw emotion that comes through in these messages helps to keep us motivated to make the best products in the world for our customers.

The Journey of Joel Hector

Recently, I was able to speak to Joel Hector, from Calgary, about his amazing weight loss last year, and how he is spreading his message to help motivate others looking to make the incredible lifestyle changes that he has.

Joel lost over 100 pounds, going from 346 pounds in November 2012 to 242 pounds by May 2013. How did he do it? It all began with a decision to change his life and from there Joel made the difficult choice to leave his home and family to work with the team at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, FL.  With a lot of hard work, including making better and healthier food choices and exercising regularly. His favorite piece of equipment to help lose weight: the Arc Trainer!

Arc Trainer a Key to Weight Loss Success

In speaking with Joel, I was able to hear how he was introduced to the Arc Trainer and how it became such a key in his success. According to Joel:

The Arc [Trainer] became my machine of choice on the second day of my program. I had started on the treadmill and found that my knee was aching from the constant impact. I found the stride/glide [of the Arc] to be smooth, the range of motion and the ability to adjust the incline allowed me to find the perfect zone to get my heart rate up and continue my workouts to completion.

Joel was working out 60 minutes at a time, multiple times a day if he could, to help him drop the weight.

"Excuse me, you're on my machine."

Joel was such a fan of the Arc Trainer that he used to put a “RESERVED” sign on it at night to ensure that it would be available for his early morning workouts. One morning, there was a man on the Arc Trainer and Joel wondered if he forgot to put his sign up. “Excuse me, you’re on my machine,” Joel told the man. “No, this is MY machine,” was the reply. Ironically, the man that was occupying the machine was none other than Cybex Chairman John Aglialoro! The two struck up a conversation and remained in touch throughout Joel’s journey.

Joel told me: “Without the Arc [Trainer], I would not have succeeded in my accomplishment. It gave me the motivation I required to come back every day. That is the assurance you need from your partner to succeed and the Arc [Trainer] was my [workout] partner for all of those months.”

As a thank you for all of its help, Joel told me he left the Arc Trainer over 100 lb of himself to keep forever!

Proud to be a Part of Joel's Success

Congratulations on your accomplishment, Joel. I wish you much continued success. As an avid Arc devotee, I understand your loyalty to the machine. No elliptical can hold a candle to it, IMHO. Luckily, there are 6 at my gym in Scottsdale (SCC), but I do have my favorite. Perhaps the Cybex folks could see clear to get a machine to you so you'd really have your own machine, no reservations necessary? Smile Again, congrats!!!

I loved reaching Joel's story, but still I get nervous thinking that this might just be  a one-off situation. Does this sort of weight loss happen all the time on the Arc Trainer?

The Arc Trainer has been proven through numerous research that weight loss using this cross trainer is achievable. However, it is important to know that every individual is very different, and it's important to work with a medical professional and/or a personal trainer to determine the best program for your personal fitness goals.

I have been using the ArcTrainer every day for about a month.  I have also changed my diet drastically.  I have dropped 20 pounds and about 12 of those in the last 10 days.
I can know spend an hour on the machine with the settings at 6 on the left side and 25 on the right side.
Distance traveled is about 3.3 miles and I usually burn over 1,000 calories (which is my goal every time during my work outs)
My work out shirt is usually drenched by the time I am done.
Best work out I have found.
I am going to have to up the intensity from 25 to 30 soon thought as it is getting too easy

Using Cybex Arc w/arms for 3 years plus. No substantial weight loss. Minimum of 60 minutes each session, 100% load, 10 % incline. I   am a male almost 70 years who has been active most of his life. Only started using gym in last 10 years.

What do I need to do to get better results?

Although exercise plays an important role in overall health, the best way to lose body fat is to ensure that you have a healthy, well-balanced diet.
