This month saw Aaron Smyth, personal trainer at West Wood’s Clontarf Road club in Dublin, take part in the World Fitness Federation’s prestigious Mr Universe competition in Baden, Austria.
Having placed amongst the top three junior bodybuilders in Ireland for the past three years, Aaron, 23, has now progressed into international men’s competitions; For Mr Universe 2012, Aaron competed in the male fitness under 35’s category and finished in an impressive eighth position, cementing his place as one of the world’s top amateur bodybuilders.
Aaron works as a personal trainer at one of the three West Wood Clubs in Dublin; as an existing CYBEX customer, West Wood has been ordering CYBEX equipment for its gyms for over 15 years.
“My fitness regime is heavily focused around using CYBEX equipment,” confirms Aaron.
“I spend a lot of time working out on the resistance machines including the CYBEX Eagle and VR3 ranges, as well as using CYBEX treadmills to maintain my cardio fitness levels.”
Aaron also uses equipment from CYBEX’s plate loaded range: “One of my favourite pieces of CYBEX equipment is the plate loaded hack squat; it provides a great lower body workout and I use it regularly as part of my training regime.”
Mr Universe sees competitors assessed against strict judging criteria as part of the three key disciplines; front, back and sides line up, individual routine and finally, what is arguably the most important discipline of the three, comparisons. Here competitors are required to adopt eight compulsory comparisons poses where the judges then assess selected competitors against each other.
“When I’m in training for a competition, my fitness regime doesn’t actually differ that much – the only real change is to my diet,” explains Aaron.
“This means that I am using CYBEX equipment all year round and it without doubt delivers to the high standards of both quality and durability that are required for my training needs.”
As part of CYBEX’s long term partnership with West Wood Clubs, the gym chain recently built brand new functional training zones and BoxFit studios. In addition to supplying the fitness equipment, CYBEX also assisted with the design of the BoxFit studio, supplied all required equipment and arranged all necessary training and instructor certifications with Boxercise®.
The partnership has seen an entire range of CYBEX equipment installed over the years, including Pro+ and Pro3 treadmills from an earlier commercial range, as well as original CYBEX equipment including VR, Trotter treadmills and Galileo strength pieces.
