State-of-the-art fitness facilities for students, staff and the local community
Cybex International has partnered with Nuffield Health, the UK’s premier provider of corporate and wellbeing services, to deliver the Education Project, a new initiative to deliver state-of-the-art fitness facilities to schools and colleges across the UK.
With budgets for new or refurbished fitness facilities in schools and colleges becoming increasingly limited, Cybex and Nuffield Health are working in partnership to deliver a fitness solution which not only removes any costs, but can also generate regular revenue for the institution.
How does a site qualify for the scheme?
A school, college or university must have a suitable space to house a small fitness centre (approximately 1200 sq. ft.), plus two ‘bookable’ facilities e.g. a sports hall, floodlit AstroTurf pitch and / or a swimming pool.
If the site meets the necessary criteria, the fitness facility will then be designed, installed and managed by Nuffield Health and will be fully equipped by Cybex.
Who funds the installation of the gym?
The initial investment required from Nuffield Health is typically a minimum of £60,000 per site but no funding is required from the school.
The school will have the opportunity to generate regular income from the new gym, with the option of a regular fee paid by Nuffield Health to schools for the use of the sites. In addition, should the school have budget available to invest in the project, it would then also be entitled to a share of the profits generated from gym memberships.
The exact figures involved vary considerably between different sites and are dependent on a variety of factors including the size of the facility, local population, membership numbers etc.
Who will have access to the gym?
Once up and running, the school or college and its students will have full and sole use of the fitness facility throughout the school day. At the end of this and during weekends, Nuffield Health staff take over the management of the facility, when the site opens to the public.
The gyms operate on a low cost membership strategy and members and the local community will also be able to hire the ‘bookable’ facilities at the school.

Nuffield Health incorporates its wealth of experience and knowledge into an all-round wellbeing service provided to schools and their students. This includes:
- Student workshops and advice provided by Nuffield Health on a range of issues such as nutrition, exercise, stress, drugs, alcohol and bullying
- Nutritionists engage and work with school caterers to advise on improving the diet of students
- REPs level 4 workshops offered to school staff at all Nuffield Health education sites
- Nuffield HealthScore™ - A real-time indicator of health and wellbeing which is provided free of charge to all students.
